In 1997, the Hassan Fathy housing division of the ICI formed a partnership and joint project with the United Nations Center for Human Settlements. The Hassan Fathy Habitat II Joint Project was an innovative collaboration that brought together unions and employers with housing and international development specialists, diplomats, architects, economists, and spiritual leaders. Three tasks forces were formed to focus on sustainable architecture, investment guarantees for housing for the poorest of the poor and trade union mobilization. Over the course of two years the task forces met several times, resulting in the drafting of a report titled “Early Deaths, Stunted Lives – the Hassan Fathy Project to Resolve the Global Housing Crisis.” The report was formally presented to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in 2001 during the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Housing.
